James, 83, was a prolific painter for most of his life, using only a palette in his craft. He is blind now due to macular degeneration and cannot pursue his passion.
In his early years, after James finished college, he served in four battles in the Pacific during WWII. After his service, he was invited to work with the Marshall Plan for a number of years and lived in Norway, London, Italy and Spain. Homesick for the United States, he returned and settled in New Jersey where he taught art for 14 years. In order to pursue his own passion for painting, James retired and went into the antique business in the Northeast. He pursued his art for many years until he lost his sight.
The AARP Foundation Gift Planning office had been communicating with James for over a year, assisting him with various gift options. He is not rich but had a very sizeable CD, and was deliberating over renewing his CD or entering into a charitable gift annuity. Just after his 82nd birthday, James decided to do the charitable gift annuity.
Since James had no heirs, he wanted a worthy charity to benefit from his life's savings. He also needed a steady, guaranteed stream of income. But the most influential factor in his decision? He trusts AARP.
James has a very gentle heart and loves cats. While on a recent visit with James, the gift planner and he were walking along Main Street in his small upstate New York town. They discovered the most unique cat adoption house. James had the greatest time going from floor to floor visiting with the various cats. Using his walking stick, James now visits it almost every day.
